Date: March 12, 2006
Verse: Srimad Bhagavatam 3.9.11, as cited in CC Adi 3.111
Speaker: HH Bhakti Purusottama Swami

quote:

tvam bhakti-yoga-paribhavita-hrt-saroja
asse sruteksita-patho nanu natha pumsam
yad yad dhiya ta urugaya vibhavayanti
tat tad vapuh pranayase sad-anugrahaya

TRANSLATION:

"O my Lord, You always dwell in the vision and hearing of Your pure devotees. You also live in their lotuslike hearts, which are purified by devotional service. O my Lord, who are glorified by exalted prayers, You show special favor to Your devotees by manifesting Yourself in the eternal forms in which they welcome You."

PURPORT:

This text from Srimad-Bhagavatam (3.9.11) is a prayer by Lord Brahma to the Supreme Personality of Godhead Krsna for His blessings in the work of creation. Knowledge of the Supreme Personality of Godhead can be understood from the descriptions of the Vedic scriptures. For example, the Brahma-samhita (5.29) describes that in the abode of Lord Krsna, which is made of cintamani (touchstone), the Lord, acting as a cowherd boy, is served by hundreds and thousands of goddesses of fortune. Mayavadis think that the devotees have imagined the form of Krsna, but the authentic Vedic scriptures have actually described Krsna and His various transcendental forms.

The word sruta in sruteksita-pathah refers to the Vedas, and iksita indicates that the way to understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead is by proper study of the Vedic scriptures. One cannot imagine something about God or His form. Such imagination is not accepted by those who are serious about enlightenment. Here Brahma says that one can know Krsna through the path of properly understanding the Vedic texts. If by studying the form, name, qualities, pastimes and paraphernalia of the Supreme Godhead one is attracted to the Lord, he can execute devotional service, and the form of the Lord will be impressed in his heart and remain transcendentally situated there. Unless a devotee actually develops transcendental love for the Lord, it is not possible for him to think always of the Lord within his heart. Such constant thought of the Lord is the sublime perfection of the yogic process, as the Bhagavad-gita confirms in the Sixth Chapter (47), stating that anyone absorbed in such thought is the best of all yogis. Such transcendental absorption is known as samadhi. A pure devotee who is always thinking of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the person qualified to see the Lord.

One cannot speak of Urugaya (the Lord, who is glorified by sublime prayers) unless one is transcendentally elevated. The Lord has innumerable forms, as the Brahma-samhita confirms (advaitam acyutam anadim ananta-rupam [Bs. 5.33]). The Lord expands Himself in innumerable svamsa forms. When a devotee, hearing about these innumerable forms, becomes attached to one and always thinks of Him, the Lord appears to him in that form. Lord Krsna is especially pleasing to such devotees, in whose hearts He is always present because of their highly elevated transcendental love.
So this verse explains why Krsna descends to this material world. The purport of this verse is not from Srimad-Bhagavatam. This verse appears in Caitanya-caritamrta and Srila Prabhupada has given another purport to this verse. Today we will discuss about the appearance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead because day after tomorrow we are going to observe the most auspicious appearance day of Lord Gauranga.

Whenever the appearance day of Lord Gauranga or any form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead comes closer, many questions arise in our mind. Why the Lord appears, how he appears, when he appears? If he is appearing, among the transcendentalists it is great question also, when we say Lord appears then the question arises, is he existing somewhere else so that he appears here? There is a big debate on this among the devotees and the jnanis. They accept the form of the Lord, but they say this form of the Lord appeared from nirakara. From nirakara this sakara form he has accepted. But the Vaisnavas defy, they don't agree with this argument that the Lord is appearing from some nirakara to sakara. Rather in Bhagavad-gita, Krsna is saying:

avyaktam vyaktim apannam
manyante mam abuddhayah

Those who have no intelligence think I am coming from nirakara and accepting the sakara form. But Vaisnava acaryas, their explanation based on the Vedic literature is completely different. It is not that Krsna, Rama, Varaha, they are not existing and just manifested from nowhere or from nirakara form. They are existing eternally. That is the Lord's pastimes is in two section. There is prakata-lila and aprakata-lila. Prakata-lila means the Lord's pastimes are manifest to all the people in this earthly planet, in this brahmanda. Everybody can see the prakata-lila. And aprakata-lila means the Lord's pastimes going on eternally in the spiritual world. Both the pastimes, the manifested pastimes and the unmanifested pastimes in the spiritual world, they are eternal. Eternally these pastimes are going on.

So the Lord appears in this material world, so his appearance is of two kinds. Prakata and unmanifested, unmanifested pastimes means not manifested to the people in general in this material world but it is going on in the spiritual world. Then when he descends to this material world there are two ways the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One is known as sa-dvaraka and the other is advaraka(?). Sometimes the Lord manifests to this world without having the help of any father and mother. Like Matsya, Kurma, up to Narasimha-avatara the Lord appeared without any help from father or mother. Then from Vamana-avatara we see the Lord appears with the help of father and mother. The father and mother of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are not some ordinary living entities. They are not simply some special living entities. No one, no living entity can become father and mother of Supreme Personality of Godhead. They are the transformation of the sandhini-sakti, the ever-existing potency of the Supreme Personality of Godhead which transforms to spiritual world, which transforms his father, mother who can hold the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Ordinary lady cannot hold in her womb Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Supreme Personality of Godhead doesn't depend on any external energy. He always works by his svarupa-sakti, the potency he retains within himself. He holds by his own potency, he gets pleasure by his own potency. Supreme Personality of Godhead doesn't depend on some external things to be happy. That's why he is atmarama. He is eternally happy by his own potency.

He knows everything. He is all-cognizant. But Supreme Personality of Godhead, just like our kings, they know things, but they have to send spies, CIA agents have to go all over the world to get news. But Supreme Personality of Godhead has no spy agency there. By his own potency he knows everything. By his potency of sandhini, samvit and hladini-sakti, all these activites are performed. So when he comes to this material world, he sends his father, mother, then he appears. That is known as sa-dvaraka(?) appearance.

So today, though there are many questions to be answered, today we will mainly focus why the Lord appears in this material world. "O Supreme Personality of Godhead, why do you come into this material world?" When you ask this question, then Krsna has an answer to that. Krsna replies:

paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam
dharma-samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge

These are the reasons why I am descending millennium after millennium. But our acaryas are not satisfied with the answer that Krsna is giving why I am coming millennium after millennium to annihilate the miscreants, to reestablish dharma, and to deliver my devotees. They are not satisfied fully: "Why Lord you have to come to annihilate the miscreants? Simply a virus, a germ, can kill all these guys in your creation. Why you personally have to come? Why you have to descend to reestablish dharma? Acaryas can come and do this. You are coming to deliver your devotees? Devotees means they are already delivered. What you have to deliver them?"

So why Krsna has to come? This is very big question that why Lord descends?

They are putting that this is external reason, Krsna has given external reason why he comes. But here is internal reason. The real reason is given, to give pleasure to his devotees, to fulfill the desires of his devotees:

[unknown verse]

The Lord explains, "I am descending in this material world exhibiting my pastimes to give pleasure to my devotees."

Kuntidevi also, in her prayers to Lord Krsna when he was about to leave Hastinapura for Dvaraka, he went to Kuntidevi and in her prayer she is saying - she has given many reasons why Lord you have descended to this material world. One reason she is giving:

bhakti-yoga-vidhanartham katham pasyema hi striyah

You have come here to give bhakti-yoga. So the real purpose why Lord comes to this material world is "anugrahaya bhaktanam", being merciful upon the devotees.

anugrahaya bhaktanam manusam deham asthitah
bhajate tadrsih krida yah srutva tat-paro bhavet

The real reason is being merciful upon his devotees, the Lord is descending. By hearing his pastimes people will be attracted towards him. That is the paritranaya sadhunam, what sadhus are suffering? Sadhus are suffering from separation from Supreme Personality of Godhead, so Lord descends. This is real reason why Lord comes millennium after millennium.

So this is general reason. For all the different forms of Supreme Personality of Godhead, bhagavat-svarupa, anadi anantarupam, from time immemorial, eternally, unlimited forms, that Supreme Personality of Godhead, he has manifested in spiritual world in unlimited forms: Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha. Whatever species you see, maybe that many forms, much more than those forms he must have.

Somebody was is telling in some Purana, we know Lord appeared as fish, as boar, as lion, as horse, as elephant also Lord appeared. Once he appeared as tiger, tiger incarnation, once mosquito incarnation. But that mosquito is not ordinary mosquito, must be very powerful mosquito. [chuckles] So the Lord has all kinds of forms. She is giving this reason why the Lord comes.

But why Krsna comes? If svayam-bhagavan Krsna comes there must be some special reason. Krsna will not come for same reason that any other form of Supreme Personality of Godhead is coming. He must have some special form. And Krsnadas Kaviraja Goswami has revealed in Caitanya-caritamrta that why Krsna comes:

prema-rasa-niryasa karite asvadana
raga-marga bhakti loke karite pracarana

He has a reason, he has a specific reason that no other incarnation would have that reason. Only Krsna will have that reason. What is that specific reason? There are two reasons. One is to relish the essence of prema, the mellows of prema, the mellows of devotion. This is his own purpose. For two purpose the Lord appears. One purpose relates to the people in general in this brahmanada, this universe. The brahmanda-sambandhiya karana. Then the internal reason is own, he has own purpose. He has his own benefit in this creation. Even in this material world he has own benefit. What is his own purpose? He relishes the essence of prema rasa. And what more? To preach the raga marga bhakti. The two purposes why Krsna comes.

Next question is why Krsna has a desire like this? Why Krsna wants this? Why he develops desires like this? That reason is also given. Krsna he is

rasika-sekhara krsna parama-karuna
ei dui hetu haite icchara udgama

Iccha means desire. Why this kind of desire develops, arises within Krsna? That reason one has to give because Krsna is Parambrahma, he is apta-kama, he is fully satisfied. Then why in spite of that he has to have desires? Desires he has because constitutionally the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, is rasika-sekhara, he is the topmost among everyone to relish the mellows. That's why he develops the desire to relish the essence of all the rasas.

Then second is he wants to give raganuga-bhakti. Why he wants to give raganuga-bhakti? Because he is parama-karuna, he is very, very merciful. So he finds it very difficult not to give people these highest things. So Krsna is thinking, "These people are worshiping me in vaidhi-bhakti all over the world but they never get this raga-bhakti. And Krsna is the most merciful personality so once in a day of Brahma he feels to come down personally. Without Krsna, no other form of Supreme Personality of Godhead can give this prema-bhakti to others. Krsna is so powerful even if he can give this prema-bhakti, "latasvapi koti" he can give to the trees, to the mountains, to the water, everybody he can give this prema bhakti.

In this way Krsnadas Kaviraja Goswami is explaining this is the external reason and internal reason for Krsna's advent in this material world.

External reason is:

And internal reason is to relish the prema-bhakti, prema-rasa, and to teach raganuga-bhakti.

The same way, the reason for the advent of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Krsnadas Kaviraja Goswami explains two reasons also. One is external reason and one is internal reason, bahiranga and antaranga. External reason, he is explaining:

anarpita-carim cirat karunayavatirnah kalau
samarpayitum unnatojjvala-rasam sva-bhakti-sriyam
harih purata-sundara-dyuti-kadamba-sandipitah
sada hrdaya-kandare sphuratu vah saci-nandanah

In this specific Kali, not in every Kali, in this specific Kali, Vaivasvata-manvantara, asta-vimsati catur-yuga, 28th catur-yuga or divya-yuga, in this Kali-yuga, Krsna is appearing as Lord Gauranga. What for he is appearing? In this age of Kali being very merciful he has come to give something which was never given before. Never given before means for long, long time this was not given. What is that thing? To distribute a very valuable wealth, sri, sampat, what is that most sampat, what is that most valuable wealth?

You have wealth, you can go to market, you buy your vegetables, you can buy radio, you can buy Ambassador car - not in your country, there is no Ambassador car [chuckles] - you can buy computer, but Caitanya Mahaprabhu came and he gave some wealth. It is explained, never given before, what Mahaprabhu gave, Mahaprabhu gave bhakti, but something never given before, how is it possible? Before Caitanya Mahaprabhu came Ramanuja, Nimbarka, Visnu Swami, they have all preached about bhakti, but Caitanya Mahaprabhu gave some special bhakti which was never given before. And with this bhakti, this sri, sampat, this wealth, what you can do? You can buy even the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This is the specialty of Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy. The special mercy.

By bhakti, the regular features of bhakti is, "bhaktir evainam darsayati." Bhakti makes you to understand God, but Caitanya Mahaprabhu gave a bhakti by which you will not understand God as God. This is the speciality of Caitanya Mahaprabhu's bhakti. This kind of bhakti was never given before.

samarpayitum unnatojjvala-rasam sva-bhakti-sriyam

That Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, is very effulgent, more than molten gold and that Hari, let that Hari appear within the heart of all the living entities.

Krsnadas Kaviraja Goswami is giving another meaning to this. Hari means lion. So when lion comes in the forest, the roaring sound of lion, the animals they listen. The elephant goes and hides inside some cave. The lion goes and searches where is this elephant? He searches the elephant and breaks his head and eats the brain. The lion likes to eat the brain of the elephant. So he is saying in the same way the Caitanya-simha, Lord Gaurahari appears within the cave. The heart is compared to a cave, in the cave-like heart of the human being and eats all the kalmasa, all the material desires will be cleaned by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

In this way the external reason has been explained that Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared to give this nama-? prema, through the chanting of the holy name we can get prema. This is the specialty of this holy name. We know if you chant any name of Supreme Personality of Godhead you'll become free from sinful reaction. You chant the name of Supreme Personality of Godhead, you will get liberation, but any mantra, any holy name of Supreme Personality of Godhead will not give us the krsna-prema. It is only:

hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare
hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare

Only this solo-nama, batrish-akshar, [16 names, 32 syllables] this can give krsna-prema. So this special thing Caitanya Mahaprabhu brought. This is stated as external reason, bahiranga-karana.

Many sahajiya people say, "Oh this is the external reason, we want internal reason, what is the internal?" But we should understand for Supreme Personality of Godhead this material world is external to the spiritual world. Though for him it is external reason, but for the living entity this is very special. The Lord is being very merciful, he has come to give us something that he never gives so easily. This time he has come to give us the special thing, the most confidential wealth. He never gives to anybody, but now he has come to give. To whom? Not to qualified people. He doesn't search who is qualified to get this. He searches who is the most unqualified, "I'll give this thing to him." This specialty, the maha-vadanyata, the magnanimity of this special form of the Absolute Truth, Parabrahman, Lord Gauranga's form. So though it is external it is very important for us also.

Because time is very limited, very quickly I'll go to the internal reason. That has been explained in Caitanya-caritamrta:

sri-radhayah pranaya-mahima kidrso vanayaiva-
svadyo yenadbhuta-madhurima kidrso va madiyah
saukhyam casya mad-anubhavatah kidrsam veti lobhat
tad-bhavadhyah samajani saci-garbha-sindhau harinduh

So Supreme Personality of Godhead has developed lobha, lobha means greedy, he has become greedy. What he has become greedy for? Three reasons, three desires he has not fulfilled when Lord came as Lord Krsna. Three unfulfilled desires that he fulfilled in this form of Lord Gauranga. What are these three things? The greatness of the love of Srimati Radharani. What great is this? How special is this? So difficult. Even Lord Krsna took some time to realize. That sweetness she is relishing which I am retaining within me. What kind of sweetness is that? What kind of pleasure she is deriving by serving me? You have to understand these three things. To fulfill these three desires, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krsna, he appeared as Lord Gauranga. Indu means moon. That Krsnacandra, he appeared as Gauracandra, just like moon arises form ocean. In the same way, Lord Gauranga arises from the womb of Mother Saci.

So Krsnadas Kaviraja Goswami has explained each line of this verse in Bengali poetry, explaining everything, but this is such a confidential subject matter that before explaining this topic, Krsnadas Kaviraja Goswami is telling to himself, "Should I tell these things to people or should I not tell?" He's saying:

e saba siddhanta gudha,-kahite na yuyaya
na kahile, keha ihara anta nahi paya

All these conclusions are very confidential, unfit to disclose in public. Unfit, I should not disclose in public, but if I will not disclose it people will not know it. This most confidential subject matter will remain unknown to people. That is why I will explain to the people. I'll explain to the people:

ataeva kahi kichu karina nigudha
bujhibe rasika bhakta, na bujhibe mudha

I'll explain the essence of this subject matter. I'll explain in such a way the fools will not understand, the stupid people will not understand. Only the devotees will understand. And which kind of devotees will understand? Not any kind of devotee will understand. Only those devotees who are holding Gauranga-Nityananda. This subject matter only they can understand:

hrdaye dharaye ye caitanya-nityananda
e-saba siddhante sei paibe ananda

Only he will enjoy who is holding Gauranga and Nityananda within his heart. Others will not enjoy. Others are like camel. Camel cannot enjoy. The cuckoo bird can enjoy the juice of mango, the camels cannot enjoy. The followers of Lord Gauranga can enjoy.

Then he is explaining what happened. One day Krsna was sitting in Goloka Vrindavan. He is thinking to himself, he is feeling - it's a very interesting topic.

krsnera vicara eka achaye antare
purnananda-purna-rasa-rupa kahe more

He's thinking to himself, "What is going on? Everybody knows I am complete bliss, full of bliss, full of all rasas, ananda-khanda, anandam brahma, raso vai saha. I 'm made up of bliss, everybody gets pleasure from me only. The three worlds get pleasure from me, is there anybody who can give me pleasure? Everybody gets pleasure from me, how somebody can give me pleasure? Only he can give me pleasure if he has 100 times better qualities than me."

Then Krsna, he's analyzing and thinking to himself, "Who is in this world, there's no possibility who can have more qualities than me, who can give pleasure to me. But I see only in Srimati Radharani:

ama haite guni bada jagate asambhava
ekali radhate taha kari anubhava

I feel very much pleasure, radha-prema. Krsna-prema and radha-prema, very interesting point that we should understand. When I say krsna-prema, what we understand from that? Krsna-prema means I love Krsna, isn't it. Krsna-prema means I love Krsna. Radha-prema means? I love Radha. Krsna-prema means the prema that I love Krsna. Radha-prema means the prema that Radharani loves to Krsna. That is radha-prema.

It's a very interesting point and our acaryas explain in such a fantastic way, now I can understand why in spite of so many austerities they are relishing all these subject matters. So subtle difference is there, prema, asraya-jatiya prema, visaya-jatiya prema. Krsna-visayaka prema, that love relates to Krsna, then bhakti-visayaka prema, that love relates to devotees. So in this prema there is asraya and visaya. Asraya means, Prabhupada explains, abode of prema or shelter of prema, that is the devotee, Radharani. And object of prema is Krsna.

Now Krsna is analyzing himself. The devotees by their prema are relishing the sweetness of Krsna. Five visayas are there. What are the visayas in English? Objects, five objects: sabda, sparsa, rupa, rasa, gandha; the touch, the form, the smell, etc. The devotee will relish with five senses the sweetness of Krsna. So Krsna now is analyzing that, "I am so beautiful, anybody in this world gets attracted to my beauty." Krsna is so beautiful. He's saying, that I'm "atma paryanta sarva citta hara," his beauty is so attractive that he can attract all Vraja-vasis, all Vraja-gopikas, he can attract the trees, he can attract the animals. When Krsna plays on his flute the Yamuna water flow stops, it goes upwards. That is attraction. He is so attractive. All these things have been explained in Caitanya-caritamrta step by step how he attracts the heavenly denizens. He's so attractive he attracts Laksmidevi also, the most chaste lady gets attracted towards the beauty of Krsna.

And what to speak of Laksmidevi being attracted, her husband, Visnu, also gets attracted towards Krsna. When Krsna was ruling in Dvaraka there was the brahmanas whose six or seven children died and he was rebuking Krsna. Then Arjuna became very angry, "Why are you doing this, OK, I will protect your child." Next child born, also same thing and he was rebuking Arjuna. Then Krsna became very angry and said, "OK, I will go and search for your children."

Then Krsna and Arjuna went to Yamaraja, he's not there in Yamaloka. Finally they went to sahasra-sirsa Visnu. Krsna offered his humble obeisances, "Please accept my humble obeisances. My dear Visnu, why did you take the children of this brahmanas?"

Visnu said, "My dear Lord Krsna, I wanted to see your lotus face, beautiful face. This was the only way I could bring you up here. That's why I arranged this thing."

In this way, even Visnu gets attracted. And what to speak of Visnu getting attracted, his beauty "atma paryanta sarva citta hara," attracts the heart of all the living entites, including his own heart also. When Krsna was in Dvaraka once he found his own reflection in the wall on the pillar. By seeing that beauty, "Oh, camatkara-kari", what a beautiful person! He will embrace himself, [laughter] embrace himself. So he is saying, "I am so beautiful - koti kama jini** I am so beautiful, my beauty defeats the beauty of ten million Cupids. Asamaurdhva, there is no equal, no above my beauty, there is nobody higher than me. By my beauty everyone is getting attracted, but

radhara darsane mora judaya nayana

When I see Radharani, my eyes get filled with bliss. The beautiful form of Srimati Radharani. The same way he is explaining, "When I play my flute, everybody gets attracted." He is going one after another, first is form, his beauty; then the sound: "When I play my flute, everyone gets attracted, but radhara vacane hare amara sravana, but when Radharani speaks so sweet, I get attracted. She completely steals my mind."

Next is smell. He is explaining:
yadyapi amara gandhe jagat sugandha
mora citta-prana hare radha-anga-gandha

"My body lends fragrance to the entire creation but whenever I get the scent of Radharani's limbs, that captivates me." Radharani comes to take bath in Radha Kunda, then Krsna is grazing cows in Govardhan and sometimes the wind brings that smell. All the gopis are taking bath and Radharani's head is spinning like this, falls down. "Hey, what happened? What happened to you?"

"No, no, no, nothing has happened."

What has happened? That smell has come. But that smell has entered everybody's nose, not only Radharani's nose. Why she has fainted? Why other gopis don't faint(?). The highest topmost love has manifested in her. She only can recognize, not everybody can recognize that. That smell, that form, the magnitude of bodily smell, his flavor, everything, will manifest as much love one has manifested.

In the same way also Krsna explains the entire creation is full of different tastes. Now he comes to tastes. Why are there tastes in material world? Because of me, all these tastes come from me, but whenever I take something from mouth of Radharani, it's so nice I am completely captured. I am completely captured when I eat some betel nuts from Radharani's mouth. So who is greater? Krsna is greater or Radharani is greater? Who is greater?

Devotees: Radharani

Radharani is greater:

yadyapi amara sparsa kotindu-sitala
radhikara sparse ama kare susitala

If somebody touch my body, my body has such a cooling, soothing effect he'll feel it to be like millions of moons. But still if I touch Radharani's body, I feel more cooler. I feel more cooler. So in this way although I am source of happiness for entire world, the beauty and attributes of Sri Radhika are my life and soul.

So who is great, Radharani or Krsna?

Devotees: Radharani.

Krsna is giving a second thought to these things, a second thought to these things. Is Radharani more or am I more? I am enjoying Radharani and Radharani is enjoying me; by serving me she is enjoying. But at the end of pastimes I find she is enjoying million times better than me. If you take neem leaves your face will be different than if you take nice rasagulla. [laughter]

By seeing the faces of the gopis, Krsna can understand. Krsna enjoys by getting some service, but when he sees the faces of the gopis, "These are enjoying million of times better than me. I am supposed to be the topmost enjoyer but I am loser. So it is not that Radharani has something I am enjoying, I must have something better than Radharani, but she is enjoying millions of times more than me. So I must give second thought then now."

Now he is analyzing, "ei mata anubhava amara pratita" In this way, my affectionate feeling for Srimati Radharani may be understood, but on analyzing all these things I find them very contradictory. Something very different. Then again he is analyzing, "OK, by my beauty everybody gets attracted, all three worlds, everybody gets attracted. Radharani is so beautiful my eyes get filled with pleasure when I see her. But when she sees me, what happens to her? When Radharani sees me - amara darsane radha sukhe ajnana - when Radharani looks upon me, she faints! When I look upon her I may get a little pleasure but when she looks upon me she faints. So who is greater, Radharani or Krsna?

It's within Krsna. So again he analyzes all these five topics, sabda, rasa, rupa, gandha, sparsa. So that means something is within me higher than her. In the same way he is also explaining that by listening my flute everybody gets attracted. When I listen to Radharani's sound vibration I get very much pleasure also. But when she listens to the flute I play, what happens to Radharani? Then he is saying what to speak of listening to the sound of my flute, forget that:

paraspara venu-gite haraye cetana
mora bhrame tamalere kare alingana

In forest, the bamboos, sometimes what they do, they scratch, no? Rubbing, rubbing, bamboos rub and some sound vibration comes. That is almost close to the sound vibration of my flute. What to speak of hearing my flute sound vibration, by hearing the rubbing sound of bamboos, by that sound only Radharani faints. Then just imagine what attraction I have if I play my flutes.

In the same way, everybody gets pleasure, my body is koti-indu susitala, very pleasing, and I get pleasure by embracing Radharani, but what happens to her when she embraces me? And Krsna says, forget embracing me, just she finds a tree, Tamal tree, which looks like my body complexion, forget embracing me, she finds a tree and she catches that and embraces:

krsna-alingana painu, janama saphale
krsna-sukhe magna rahe vrksa kari' kole

"Oh, I am embracing Krsna." By embracing a tree, she gets so much pleasure, she completely forgets everything. That means it is not within Radha, it is something within me and she is deriving the pleasure.

Then smell also, bodily smell of Radharnai also gives me pleasure, but when the smell of my body goes to Radharani what happens to her? From whichever direction the smell is coming Radharani feels to fly in that direction!

anukula-vate yadi paya mora gandha
udiya padite cahe, preme haya andha

Blind completely to what is happening. And when she relishes the betel nut chewed by me, she is completely floating in the ananda-samudra, in the ocean of bliss.

In this way Krsna is saying if I will explain with hundreds of mouths, I cannot explain fully what Radharani is enjoying by serving me. So after analyzing all these things, Krsna is thinking, he is developing some interest that, "How can I also relish like this? How can I relish like Srimati Radharani?

tate jani, mote ache kona eka rasa
amara mohini radha, tare kare vasa

>From this I understand that some unknown mellow in me controls the entire existence of my captivated Srimati Radharani, something within me. So Krsna is trying in different ways how to do that. Many different ways, he failed. Finally he decided that the only possibility is there if I accept the mood of Srimati Radharani. These three desires of mine were not satisfied, but one cannot enjoy them in a contrary position, so as a result he accepted tad-bhavadhya, the mood of Srimati Radharani:

radhikara bhava-kanti angikara vine
sei tina sukha kabhu nahe asvadane

I will accept the mood and bodily effulgence of Srimati Radharani and in that way I can relish.

This is the internal reason, this is the real reason, the personal reason why Lord Krsna appeared as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Though to understand this subject matter, Krsnadas Kaviraja Goswami primarily has explained many other things to understand what is Radharani, what is this prema, and what is this sukha. All this has been analyzed. I just went to the last portion of fourth chapter of Adi-lila. While you are here, if you have time, you can study the third chapter and fourth chapter and you can understand more detail.

We have no time otherwise I would explain you step by step to come this conclusion, it would be more better for your understanding. But at least this much you should understand that Krsna has three unfulfilled desires, and that is the greatness of his devotees that how they love him, and to relish that taste he accepted the mood of his devotee, and among all his devotees Srimati Radharani is the greatest, and accepting "radha-bhava dyuti suvalitam, naumi krsna svarupam," that krsna-svarupa, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who has accepted the mood and the bodily colour of Srimati Radharani, who has appeared as Sri Gauranga, I offer my humble obeisances unto his lotus feet.

Jai Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu ki jai! Jai samaveta bhakti vrnda ki jai! Nitai gaura sitanath premanande, hari hari bol!

[applause and cheering]
