Mexico City

The ISKCON temple in Mexico City was established under Srila Prabhupada 19 years ago. Since then, tens of thousands of people have visited it, and literally millions of books have been distributed from this important preaching center. Last year, ISKCON moved to purchase the property for $120,000 so that Their Lordships Sri Sri Radha-Madana-Gopala (installed in 1973) may have an uncontested home. According to Guruprasad Swami, three-fourths of the price has been raised. This involved the sale of an ISKCON farm in Mexico as well as other fund-raising efforts. However, there is an urgent need to raise the remaining $30,000 of the purchase price. By contractual agreement, the purchase was supposed to have been completed by October 1988. The seller-landlord can now look for another buyer and move to evict Their Lordships and the devotees.

This property is perfectly suited for a temple. It is only five minutes from downtown, near a popular park in a quiet neighborhood 5 blocks from the presidential palace. Formerly the Ethiopian Embassy, the building is beautifully designed with arches and oriental domes. Srila Prabhupada visited this temple twice, in 1972 and 1975. He told Chitsukananda dasa, then Temple President, “This place has a natural transcendental atmosphere”. He also told Hridayananda dasa Goswami that the building was very appropriate for a temple and should be kept. It is now the only monument left to commemorate Srila Prabhupada’s physical presence in Latin America.

Anyone interested in more information or in helping to complete this purchase may contact Mexico City Crisis, c/o Rohini Kumara Swami, 3764 Watseka Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90034; phone (213) 836-4481.
