His Holliness Tamal Krishna Gosvami Maharaja
(1946-2002)

Was an ISKCON Governing Body Commissioner and initiating spiritual master. Accepted as a disciple by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in 1968, he quickly emerged as a leader in ISKCON, establishing temples around the world. As one of Srila Prabhupada's most trusted disciples, he often served as Srila Prabhupada personal secretary. His lectures, available in audio and video, bring the wealth and vast knowledge of Vedic culture and history into a practical present-day perspective. HH Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaja also was the author of many books on transcendental knowledge, including two classical Vedic dramas. Though no longer physically present among us, he lives forever in his instructions, books, and in the hearts of those whose lives he touched.

Brief Biography

His Holiness Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaja, ISKCON Governing Body Commissioner and initiating spiritual master, was accepted as a disciple by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in 1968. He quickly emerged as a leader in ISKCON, establishing temples around the world.

As one of Srila Prabhupada's most trusted disciples, he also worked closed with Srila Prabhupada as his personal secretary. His lectures, available in audio and video, bring the wealth and vast knowledge of Vedic culture and history into a practical present-day perspective.

Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaja is also the author of many books on transcendental knowledge, including two classical Vedic dramas.

On March 15th 2002 His Holiness Tamal Krishna Goswami left his body after sustaining injuries in a car accident. He was traveling in a taxi with two devotees, bound for the Calcutta airport after leaving Mayapura at 4:15 in the morning.

The accident occurred at Phuliya, near Shantipura, about sixty kilometers from Mayapura. This very sacred place is mentioned several times in the Caitanya-caritamrita in connection with the pastimes of Srila Haridasa Thakura. Phuliya is the place where Haridasa Thakur lived in a cave and chanted 300,000 names of Krishna daily. There Haridasa also resisted the temptation by Maya, and this is also where he was beaten in twenty-two marketplaces for his devotion to the holy name.

Speakers have noted that the day he left his body is the anniversary of the disappearance of Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaja and Rasikananda Prabhu.

¡Tamal Krishna dasa Goswami Ki-jai!

Remembreance from HH Hridayananda dasa Goswami

Because His Holiness Tamal Krishna Goswami was such a great servant of Srila Prabhupada, his passing is a powerful teaching of Krishna Consciousness that brings us closer to Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krishna. I pray that we all honor Tamal Krishna Goswami by deeply assimilating the many valuable lessons which he has given us through his life, his teaching, his writing, and even his glorious passing at a most auspicious time and place in the presence of many exhalted Vaisnavas. Srila Prabhupada would always call upon him to render unique and powerful services, and as we all know without a doubt Srila Prabhupada has again called his right-hand man, Tamala Krishna Goswami, to another service, to again do what he alone can do.

One cannot help but observe throughout the entire world, the massive, spontaneous, heartfelt outpouring of love, honor, and devotion for Tamala Krishna Goswami. Indeed the intensity of grief, shock and loving admiration is second only to that shown to Srila Prabhupada himself.

Last night, in an intimate home program in Minnesota, USA, I spoke at length on Goswami Maharaja's long list of distinguished, inimitable achievements in the service of Lord Krishna. I will not repeat that list here, but rather I will conclude with a heartfelt observation of my own:

In passing on to even more glorious devotional service, the great Vaishnava Tamala Krishna Goswami has taken a giant step toward the achievment of yet another of his cherished goals: the restoration of deep, generous, and loving Vaishnava culture to ISKCON. The tidal wave of appreciation and affection for him which already engulfs the ISKCON world, and which is growing daily.

Has already begun to sweep away years of accumulated cynicism and skepticism. Faith is replacing doubt. Generosity is replacing reluctance. Love is replacing bitterness. Devotees are freely declaring to the world that a great Vaishnava has passed, and in doing so they personally and deeply recognize and acknowledge that Srila Prabhupada's dear disciple, Tamala Krishna Goswami, was indeed a great Vaishnava. We all, in our grief, cry out that this was an exalted servant of Srila Prabhupada, a great soul who played a mighty part in transforming the world. Devotees everywhere are seeing that every living being that benefits from Srila Prabhupada's movement, owes an eternal debt to His Holiness Tamala Krishna Goswami who did more than words can tell to serve the mission of his eternal spiritual master Srila Prabhupada.

Let us rejoice in our certain knowledge that Tamala Krishna Goswami will now speedily return to the personal service of his eternal spiritual master, a service which he valued above all things.

From his younger brother and eager servant
Hridayananda das Goswami

Remembrance from Gunagrahi dasa Goswami

Dear Disciples. Followers, and Well Wishers of Srila Gurudeva,
Please accept my best wishes. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

For His own reasons, Krsna has taken away our dearmost leader, spiritual master, father, and friend. My heart goes out to all of you at this saddest of times, and I pray that Krsna will give you the strength to push on in spite of the grief that has inflicted us all.

When I heard the news my first inclination was to leave the dham and go directly to Texas to be with all of you, because for many years I have felt very much a part of the family there. I was then advised by some of the disciples in Houston and Dallas that some of Srila Gurudeva's other close godbrothers were on their way to Texas, and that I should not change my plans. Thus my body is still here, although my thoughts remain with you.

Among Srila Gurudeva's numerous glorious qualities was his ability to personally train his disciples to become first class followers of Srila Prabhupada. I know that it will undoubtedly be difficult to push on without him, but by keeping him in your hearts he will never in fact leave you. Rather, he will continue to guide you, inspire you, feast with you, joke with you, walk with you, preach with you, and in the end take you back to Godhead where you will finally reside together eternally.

If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.

Always at your service, and looking forward to seeing you, I remain...

You wellwisher and friend:
Gunagrahi das Goswami
